The Journey to Finding Your Truth: Why It Matters and How to Begin
In a world filled with constant noise and external expectations, have you ever stopped to ask yourself: "What do I truly, wholeheartedly believe?"
These questions lead us to our personal truth—that deep-seated knowledge in our core that we know to be true without doubt and with every fiber of our being. Your personal truth serves as both your anchor in turbulent times and your North Star when charting your path forward.
But here's the challenge: most of us have never been taught how to identify, articulate, or live by our personal truths. Instead, we absorb beliefs from our families, cultures, media, and peers, often without questioning which ones truly resonate with our authentic selves.
Why Finding Your Truth Matters Now More Than Ever
We're living in an age of unprecedented distraction and influence. Social media algorithms, targeted advertising, and curated content constantly shape our perceptions about what we should want, believe, and aspire to. Without a strong internal compass, we risk building lives that look successful from the outside but feel hollow from within.
Research from the field of positive psychology confirms this disconnect. A 2021 study published in the Journal of Happiness Studies found that people who make decisions aligned with their core values report greater life satisfaction, resilience against stress, and sense of purpose compared to those primarily driven by external metrics of success.
Most people spend more time planning a weekend getaway than identifying the truth that will guide their entire life
When you know your truth, you gain clarity that benefits every aspect of your life:
Decision-making becomes simpler. Instead of endless pro-con lists, you can ask, "Does this align with my truth?"
Relationships become more authentic. You attract people who appreciate the real you, not a version you're performing.
Career choices become more fulfilling. You pursue work that matters to you, not just what impresses others.
Difficult times become more manageable. Your truth provides stability when everything else feels uncertain.
The Real Obstacles to Discovering Your Truth
If finding your truth is so valuable, why don't more people prioritize it? In my years of coaching professionals through this journey, I've observed several common barriers:
1. The Shortcut Problem
Our brains create shortcuts to process the barrage of stimuli we receive every second. While these shortcuts help us function day-to-day, they can prevent us from examining what's beneath the surface of our automatic thoughts and reactions.
2. The External Validation Trap
Many of us have become so accustomed to external validation that we've lost touch with our internal guidance system. We ask "What will others think?" before asking "What do I think?"
3. The Busyness Badge
Our culture celebrates busyness as a status symbol. Constant doing leaves little space for the reflection required to uncover our truth.
4. The Vulnerability Fear
Discovering your truth requires honesty with yourself, which can mean confronting uncomfortable realizations about your current life, relationships, or choices.
Reflective writing activates different parts of the brain through sensory-motor coordination while simultaneously slowing cognitive processing
The Science Behind Finding Your Truth
The process of finding your personal truth isn't just philosophical—it's neurologically transformative. Practices like reflective journaling have been shown to strengthen neural pathways and improve cognitive processing.
Studies from the National Institutes of Health have demonstrated that reflective writing activates different parts of the brain through sensory-motor coordination while simultaneously slowing cognitive processing. This combination creates the ideal conditions for deeper insight and meaningful self-discovery.
When we intentionally engage in practices that help us connect with our truth, we're literally rewiring our brains to align more closely with what matters most to us.
A Practical Framework to Begin Finding Your Truth
While the full journey to discovering your truth requires dedicated time and guidance (which I'll share more about later), here's a streamlined process to start your exploration:
Step 1: Create Space for Reflection
The Technique: Find 20 uninterrupted minutes in a quiet space, free from distractions like notifications, music, or TV. Have a journal and pen ready.
Pro Tip: If writing feels challenging, try what I call a "walk and talk"—take a solo walk without headphones and speak your thoughts aloud. The bilateral movement of walking stimulates your brain similarly to writing.
Step 2: Begin with Your "Why"
Answer these questions in your journal:
What matters most to me right now?
What has been holding me back from exploring this deeply?
If I could change one thing about how I'm living my life, what would it be?
Reflection Hack: After writing your initial answer to each question, pause for 30 seconds and ask yourself, "Is there more?" Often, our first responses are surface-level, while deeper insights emerge with patience.
Step 3: Look for Models of What Resonates
The Technique: Identify 3-5 people (personal connections, public figures, or even fictional characters) whose lives or qualities you admire. For each person, write specific elements you're drawn to.
Important: Focus not on their possessions or status, but on their qualities, actions, relationships, and impact.
Example Questions:
What specific elements about this person draw me to them?
Is it their communication style, their intentionality, their vulnerability?
How do those qualities translate to the life I want to live?
Step 4: Peel Back the Layers With "Why"
The Technique: Take one quality or goal from your reflection and begin the "7 Whys" exercise:
Write: "I want/value [quality or goal] because..."
Take your answer and ask "why" again: "Why is that important to me?"
Continue asking "why" after each answer, digging at least 7 layers deep
Real Example:
"I want work that allows me to travel because I enjoy new experiences."
"Why do I value new experiences? Because they remind me how big and beautiful the world is."
"Why is remembering the world's beauty important? Because I want to feel connected to something bigger than my daily routine."
(Continue until you reach a truth that feels fundamental and unchangeable)
Breakthrough Indicator: You'll know you're approaching your truth when your body responds physically—perhaps with emotion, resistance, or a sense of recognition. These sensations signal you're touching something meaningful.
Step 5: Test Your Truth with "If-Then" Extrapolation
Once you've identified what feels like a core truth, use "if-then" statements to explore its implications:
"If [your truth] is true, then what does that mean about..."
Your choices?
Your relationships?
Your priorities?
Your definition of success?
Look especially for places where you feel resistance or want to add "but..." — these are growth edges where your current life might not fully align with your truth.
The Challenge of Going Deeper Alone
While these exercises provide a starting point, the full journey of finding your truth is both art and science. Many people find they need structured guidance to:
Move past their brain's defensive mechanisms
Recognize patterns across different areas of life
Translate insights into practical changes
Maintain momentum through resistance
That's why I developed the "Finding Your Truth" course—to provide a comprehensive, step-by-step framework that combines neuroscience, reflective practices, and practical application.
